If the national debt is such a priority to the republicans, as they claim, why did they only recently become so alarmed by it? They never said a word about the unprecedented deficits during the Bush administration, largely responsible for the debt levels we face today. Vice President Cheney even famously said, “Deficits don’t matter”.
The national debt is indeed a very serious problem that must be addressed. However, shouldn’t the economic recovery and job growth issues be our first concern? If the economy collapses and we go back into a recession, the national debt would skyrocket by a far greater amount than any reduction we could possibly hope for through budget reductions. More government spending via unemployment, stimulus packages, etc. coupled with less tax revenue would lead to far more perilous levels than exist today.
Cut Medicare Not Oil Subsidies
Exxon is the second most profitable company in the world. The oil industry is reaping record profits. It would follow that one of the most obvious targets when looking to cut the budget would be $44 billion in big oil subsidies. But for some reason, republicans will not touch this. How can the American people take them seriously when they refuse to end such an atrocity?
Does Grover Norquist trump the whole country?
Why should a pledge certain congressmen took to Grover Norquist hold the entire country in gridlock? These members of congress took an oath for the American PEOPLE first. If they can no longer put Americans first, then they need to step down.
